I really liked this film because the plot was very unlikely and different. It gave a different kind of tension because you did not know what to expect.
The film is about a man, whose marriage is unstable. He doesn’t have a particularly good relationship with his daughter, and he feels very empty most of the time. He falls in love with his daughter’s friend. His life is being reborn, and he wants to redeem himself of all the time he has endured while his wife was in charge. He quits his job and starts smoking pot that he buys from his daughter’s boyfriend. The theme is forbidden love and dysfunctional relationships. In the ending he gets shot by the neighbor, that also have a dysfunctional family. Everything in this film is very chaotic, even though the setting is mostly in the house and in his thoughts and only takes place in other locations a little at a time. The daughter’s friend plays a central role in this film. She represents the goal of the man, and what he wants to accomplish. This can very much be angled to the American dream, that whoever you are, if you work hard enough you can obtain whatever you desire. The film is realistic, and that is what makes the film more exciting, because this could in fact happen. There isn’t much action as in action films, but it is still suspenseful in other ways. The characters also develop throughout the film, which is an important element in making a good film. All in all, I would recommend this film for people that does not like too unrealistic films, but still wants the thrilling feeling of this very regularly unordinary film.
