The two families in the film are dysfunctional families in two different ways. The main family consisting of Lester, Carolyn and Jane is a very quiet family, in that they don’t communicate with each other, and that leads to all their problems. Carolyn doesn’t listen to Lester's sexual needs. Lesters sexual needs are so big that he snaps into this kind of teenage mind-set when he sees Angela for the first time. He becomes care-free and doesn’t think about the consequences of his actions. He becomes a person Carolyn nor Jane recognizes. That leads to fights and miscommunication between him and Carolyn. While Lester is engrossed in getting Angela to like him and Carolyn engrossed in finding comfort in another place. Jane is standing in the middle of it all. She doesn’t think that her parents care about her because they're so preoccupied with their own problems that they haven’t time to be with her and listen to her problems. Jane is closing in on herself and doesn't know who to go to, because her best friend Angela is busy with her dad.
Ricky's family isn’t very functional either. His mother has a disease where she isn’t responding to people as well as normal. His dad is a U.S marine corps, and because of that he is a much stricter parent than most people would be. He is both yelling and hitting Ricky, when he’s angry, or Rickys has done something he shouldn’t have done. Ricky is a former drug abuser, or that’s at least what his family thinks. But he is still using and in fact is selling drugs too. Ricky likes to film and document his life, and when his dad finds his camera and watches the clips. He misunderstands it completely and instead of talking to Ricky about it, he immediately acts. That shows how he can't control himself and how his relationship with Ricky really is.
