Indian Camp is a short story written by Ernest Hemmingway. It’s about a boy named Nick, his father and his uncle.

One day Nick is an intern for his father, the doctor. At night they have to row to the Indian camp to help a very sick Indian woman. Nick and his father sit in the stern in one the boats, while one of the two Indians row. Meanwhile uncle George is sitting with the other Indian man, while they row over to the Indian camp. When they get ashore uncle George offers the two Indian men cigars, which could indicate a sign of friendship or brotherhood?

After having walked for quite a while they arrive to the shanty. Inside on a wooden bunk is the Indian woman. She is lying under a quilt, while her husband is sitting in the upper bunk. The Indian woman is screaming a lot, because she is in pain. Nicks father explains to Nick that what she’s going through is called being in labor. Nick asks his father if he can give her something for the pain, but his father didn’t bring any anesthetics. He doesn’t find the screams important.

Unfortunately the baby is flipped so Nicks father has to perform a caesarean operation with a jackknife to get the baby out. While the father is performing the caesarean, three Indian men and uncle George tries to hold the woman still, but she bites George in the arm. Maybe because she is mad at him? Maybe he’s the reason she is in labor?
