Nick’s father is going to work, he’s a doctor and a very pregnant woman is in the middle of giving birth, but she has some trouble with the delivery, so Nick, his father and his uncle, George, is going to the Indian camp, to help the woman deliver her baby. To get there, they have to sail along with some Indians. When they all got to shore, the uncle offered the Indians cigars as a kind of thanks for rowing them to the Indian camp.
On their way to the Indian camp there were some dogs running towards them barking, but they were called back to the shanties they came from, so that Nick, his father, uncle and the Indians could keep moving towards the pregnant woman. As they moved further towards the cabin, Nick started to see an old Indian woman standing in the doorway, waiting for them.
They arrive at the cabin, and the pregnant woman is lying on a wooden bunk, screaming. The child is stuck and that’s why they need Nick’s father’s help to deliver the child. Her body is trying to deliver the baby, but because the child is stuck, it’s impossible. Nick’s father forgot anesthetic, so he can’t help her with the pain, the labor is causing. Nick’s father is forced to perform a C-section in order to deliver her baby. Nick’s father prepares for a C-section, but he didn’t bring tools for a C-section, so he has to use a jackknife and other materials that are by his hands.
