We are not directly told that he is uncomfortable, but it’s obvious from the way he looks away, and doesn’t seem extremely interested in what his father is explaining. We are told that Nick’s curiosity has been gone for a long time, but we are not told why, but it is possibly the screams from the woman, and sight of blood that are very overwhelming for him.

How do the events in the shanty affect Nick?

In a very short time span Nick was exposed to the whole circle of life, which is birth and death, but in a very violent and extreme way. So, I think he develops a different relationship with death. It seems to make him mature a lot, but he now feels superior to dying, and probably doesn’t understand what it really is.

Compare the seating arrangement in the boat in the beginning and the ending. What is the significance of the change?

On the way to the camp, Nick is laying in his father’s arms. He is young and naive.

On the way back he has matured, because of the things he saw at the camp, and he no longer need or want his dad to hold him. It seems like he thinks he is invincible, because he thinks he will never die, while his father is rowing the boat.
