In 1948 a new government came to power in South Africa. It was run by a Nationalist party. The party won the selection on a program about separation of the countries different ethnic groups. The program was called apartheid, which meant that the country was totally separated between the races. It was one of the most racist systems the history of the world had ever seen. The program had that purpose to keep the white people powerful and in control. The white people had better conditions than the black, coloured and Asians and they had the political and economic power in the country. Especially the black ethnic groups were violently put down by the white.
It was first after many years of violent resistance against the apartheid government, the racial system was given up.
Under apartheid some laws broke out. After 1948 13 new laws were made. These laws were made so the different races were separated completely.
Marriage between the different races was forbidden.
Every spot on the map was divided after which race could live where.
Sexual relationships between the race groups were forbidden.
The different groups had to be separated in public places, like parks, busses etc.
