In 1985, an Amish community attends the funeral of a man, who leaves his wife behind Rachel and eight-year-old son Samuel. Later Rachel and Samuel travel by train to visit Rachel's sister, which takes them into Philadelphia. While waiting for a connecting train, Samuel goes into the men's toilet and witnesses two men murders the third guy as he hides in one of the toilet boxes.
John Book is a detective, and have to unravel the case together with his partner Sergeant Elton Carter. They find out that the victim was an undercover police officer. They needed Samuel to identify the two men, he saw in the men´s toilets. So Rachel and Samuel must stay in Philadelphia. At the police station, Samuel found a picture of a man who just looked like the murder. John believes him and tells his suspicions to his college Chief Paul Schaeffer, they decided to keep the case secret so they don't have enemies already.
John got shot from McFee in his stomach, he jumped in his car and drove to his sister's house to get Rachel and Samuel back to Lancaster County. When he was on the way to drive away from the Amish farm, he drove into a birdhouse. Rachel opened the car door and saw the wound.
