The young Nelson is trying to defy the general apartheid that he lives through daily, with his work as a lawyer. Even though he is well educated, then he must live with all the struggles of a life in apartheid.
One of Nelson’s friend was brutally killed by the police. Now it was enough. He joined the “ANC”, and then he assumed the role as a leader. The “ANC” starts a resistance movement, and more and more got into it. Two years later the coloured and black people were forced to move into military monitored” town-ships”, to dissociate them from the white people.
At the time Nelson was spending a lot of hours working, and because of it, his family life is breaking apart. His wife leaves him, and she takes their two children with her. Nelson’s mom is fearing that he someday will be caught. But he meets a new girl Winnie, and they fall in love.
One day in Sharpeville, the black people are leading a rebellion against the white, because they want the right to walk outdoor without carrying their passport. It turns out to be a violent massacre. The officers start to shoot innocent people.
Nelson and the other from “ANC” learn how to make a bomb, with the purpose of making sabotage. But now the state is searching for them, and Nelson and the other from “ANC” got caught for their actions. They were brought before a judge, and Nelson explained the cause of their actions. But they were sentenced to life in prison.
