The episode “Nosedive” is about social medias development and a future society where they use social media as a ranking system. The app they use is a rating app where they can give people stars from 1-5. When I saw it I thought that it was kind of ridiculous but at the same time I also think that its only really an exaggerated version of the society we are in now. Some brands give people with many followers on instagram a thing for example a tea. Then the person with many followers drinks this tea and post a picture so all her/his followers sees it and maybe buy it. In that way you get benefits if you are popular on social media by getting things for free. Just like the rating system they use in nosedive, when Lacie has to buy a house and gets told that she can get discount if she’s over 4.5
Lacie who performs as the main character, is woman in her early thirties. She exhibits a very pretty and feminine lady with her pink dress, pink nail polish and pink phone. She has good manner and her average rating is a solid but not spectacular 4.2 in the beginning. Underneath her surface she’s desperately seeking the acknowledgement of other people, which indicates her low self-esteem. For example, when she is running in the beginning she smiles and is being very polite every time she sees someone so she can get stars. Also when she gets home we see her practicing fake laughs in the mirror so she can look good in front of others. At minute 02.20 we see a close-up of her eye, where there is a reflection of the ranking system in her eye, and that also shows us her obsession. She’s constantly aware of the ranking system which controls her actions, but makes her a good “player” in the society they are in. Lacie´s brother who seems to be happy about his live as a 3.7 says “No one is this happy, not even a 2-year-old with a fucking balloon isn’t this happy” and that really indicates that the focus in most of the people’s head isn’t to be happy. Its to achieve more stars.
