Apartheid was let's call it's resistance to the blacks where it was the white who ruled the country and the blacks did not have very many rights and they had to go around so-called a passport and if they did not they risk being jailed and there were quiet demonstrations against the white government but there was also one of the violent so-called Sharpeville massacres where the blacks appeared at a police station where they did not have their passports and there were 68 blacks and about 180 wounded blacks and after each other This bothered the ANC (African National Congrees) no longer trying to act peacefully because they killed so many of their group so now there were tough demonstrations
The race divorce was so bad that they could not go to the toilet together and they had different doctors and the doctors of the sort were often not very good because they probably did not get any education because they are black and they lived in different areas too and if you were black and were in a white area, you had NO rights and had nothing to say in your area (home country)
Nelson Mandela also his real name Rolihlahla Mandela he was one of the leading opponents of apartheid and jailed to try to leave the country without permission and he was in jail for 27 years because he also tried to lay down the white government and after him had done all the work to get a proper treatment of both breeds, he became South Africa's president and in 1993 he received Nobel Peace Prize and he lived when he was a little in an area called Thembu and he moved from there when he began his legal career
