Martin Luther King was a great American who worked for the civil rights in The U.S. He fought for the rights of African-Americans, and many people supported him.
Martin Luther King was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia, and was shot in 1968. His father was a minister in an Atlanta church. His mother was a school teacher, and she taught him to read even before he started in school.
The King family wasn’t poor, and they lived in a good neighborhood, but they were black. Blacks and whites lived in different worlds. They went to different schools, and black people always had to sit in the back of the bus, and most restaurants didn’t sell food to them.
Martin Luther king saw how badly black people were treated, therefore he joined the civil rights movement during the 1950s.
In 1955 a black woman, Rosa Parks, refused to give up her seat for a white man. The bus driver threatened her with calling the police if she didn’t stand up. She was a member of the NAACP, a black civil rights group, and she knew her rights. She refused to get up, so the driver called the police. Rosa Parks got arrested and put in prison. That made many black people angry, and it gave them a reason to protest, but they needed a leader.
