“The False moon” comprises a realistic short story, that shows the importance in a parent-child relationship. Children have the needs to feel love and support from their families. In this story, the boy, Matt admirably illustrates the outcome of a dysfunctional family situation. The short story is written by Shirley Golden and is from 2011.
The main character Matt is an adolescent boy who does not see school as enjoyable: “The kids in my class were losers…it was easy not to care” (P. 1, LL. 22-26) He is not doing well in school. Neither words or numbers have been straightforward, so he finds lines and art reliable. Matt expends all his energy trying to receive his mother’s attention. His mother prefers to spend more time with her violent boyfriend: Dan, so Matt starts doing graffiti paintings to reflect his feelings and reach out to her: “a child trapped inside a broken bottle. There’s a woman in the background, her head is turned; she’s watching the shadow of a man in the distance” (P. 4, L. 117-119) But suddenly a girl shows up at the tunnel and completes his graffiti. Matt is slowly falling in love with the girl, and she is “bringing his insides to life", despite the fact that he does not know her. As time pass by, Matt observes the girl, follows her home and often imagines them together.
