The love between a mother and her child is very unique, however it’s not everyone who get to experience it. This is the short story, “The False Moon” (2011), written by Shirley Golden, a good example off. It shows the development of a boy and his relationship with his absent mother. Shirley Golden is an American fiction author. One of the main themes in story is misleading, which is shown through the mother’s lack of interest and attendance in her son’s life. Another main theme is the teenage years, which is exposed through the main characters rebel behavior.

The short story is told by the main character, which makes it a first person narrator. The main character is a young boy, Matt, who is living alone with is absent mother, Kay. “My Mother works shifts. By the time she rolls in, I’m usually asleep.” “Nothing happened for two nights – nothing unusual. (…) Our paths didn’t cross (…)” He is lanky and skinny, with big eyes and lashes more fitted for a girl. “I’m lanky, skinny, I’m told, with large eyes and lashes more suited for a girl.” And with a scar along his jaw. “I rubbed the scar along my jaw.” Matt has a hard time in school – both with the other children, grades and subjects. “I was sitting alone. The kids in my class were losers” “I didn’t trust words, and that excluded me from most subjects; and I struggled with numbers, which barred me from the rest” ““Good to see you decided to honor us with your presence today, Matt.” Mr Lenk was old school, (…)”
