The young boy Matt is the main character in Shirley Goldens’ short story “The False Moon” from 2011. The story tells about the conflict Matt goes through with his mother, Kay, who is troubling with alcohol, and his wish for her attention. At night Matt sneaks out of his room and out in the city. Matt is quite artistic, and on his way out in the city, he comes across an abandoned railway. Here he discovers the art of graffiti painting on the walls. The painting on the wall is not finished so Matt decides to continue to finish it, here he gets help from a girl he doesn’t know. They have a special connection even though they don´t speak. Matt’s painting is the one thing giving him hope.
