“The False Moon” comprises a realistic short story, that shows the importance in a parent-child relationship. A child has the needs to feel love and support from its family. In this story, the boy Matt admirably illustrates the outcome of a dysfunctional family situation. The short story is written by Shirley Golden and is from 2011.
Kay is Matt's mother. She “wants” to hear how his day was and tries to pretend like she is listening: "Mm hmm. She stretched out a wrinkle around her eye, studied her reflection" (P. 2, L. 69) She is a single alcoholic mother and is blaming her son for all of the misdirection in their lives. When she is sober, she makes promises such as: "it's going to stop...I'm going to be different from now" (P. 4, L. 136-137) but still she fails to keep her promises as usually.
The social setting shows a dysfunctional parent-child relationship. Matt’s mother is extremely busy with her present boyfriend and she is also dealing with an alcohol abuse. Unfortunately, she is often drinking so much, that Matt needs to carry out the role as a parent: “at least there's no sick" (P. 3 L. 112) These immeasurable days make Matt skip school, isolating him from other children and causing wanton destruction of property.
