Chris Battle has fear for the long-term health of his business after a rash of meat scares. He is concerned about the future of the meal trade, because of the bad press – salmonella, Bovin Spongiform Encephalopati (BSE), and heart problems. The people´s shopping and eating habits had changed, and Battle wants to get into something else, but he doesn’t know anything else.

Why was Battle sceptical about going online?

Battle was sceptical going online with his firm, because he liked the old one where he just used the calculator. He believed that selling the traditional way, was better than the digital way. So he was scared going online for the reason that only computer geeks would like to purchase meat on the internet.

What has the internet meant to Chris Battle´s business?

Today Battle is the managing director of the company, Jack Scaife Butchers. The firm sells three and half tones of hand-cured bacon. It is without the sale of hams and black puddings. In the present day has the online business become more global, and 25% of sales are from foreign customers.

In 1998 the online business had become so successful that Battle sold the century-old market stall, lock, stock and barrel.
