Blood is a short story written by Zdravka Evttimova in 2003. I think the story takes place in a little village with a few inhabitants that are uneducated and therefore are superstitious because they might not know better. They believe that the blood of a mole has healing powers and search for it in a pet store.
The pet store is not usually very busy, not many people visits it and it is on the rim of getting closed. It is described as very dim and a narrow room. It has a gloomy smell of formalin. The owner of the pet store has worked there for five years. They are very happy with their job and likes the store, even if it is old and does not have a lot of customers. It feels like a cozy home to them. We do not get a lot of information about them. They kind of live in a routine, which is about to be changed.
One day a strange small lady comes in to the store looking for the blood of a mole. She looks sick. She is very pale and grey. She looks frightened and was trembling. She seems to be weak, she has to lean onto the wooden counter for support. The owner does not sell moles nor have ever sold them. They could tell the lady was looking for another answer, judging by the way her eyes looked and the timid stir of her fingers. The owner told the lady the truth, but later lied and told her that they might have some moles. She told them that the blood of a mole can cure sick people. The owner decides to give her some of their own blood. She knows this but takes it anyways.
