Carolyn A. Drake´s story “Pill Pusher” is about a young narrator who is unhappy with her job and feels guilty for selling addictive medication to people. The pharmacist gets irritated because a young impatient woman stands in the queue. The impatient customer needs liquid medicine for her leukemia sick daughter because she can’t swallow pills. Subsequently they both realize they haven´t been treating each other well so they apologize to each other. The story ends when the customer leaves the pharmacy and the pharmacist continues to the next customer.

The story “Pill Pusher” is written chronological except for the passage when the pharmacist thinks back on her education (L13-L15). It starts in medias res, which means starting in the middle of the story. This story starts up with the main character realizing she had made a huge mistake by choosing the wrong education and getting a job as pharmacist. The reader gets thrown into the main characters thoughts, without any introduction or presentation. The first thing we get to know is that the pharmacist had made a huge mistake. Afterwards we get details about the mentioned mistake and its influence on the main characters everyday life.

In the beginning of the story the pharmacist tells that she is disappointed of working as a pharmacist after taking a long and expensive education. She really doesn’t like her job, and she judges people without knowing them. For example she use the following expression about a customer: ”Self-entitled bitch” (L25). The main character behaves badly towards customers, which is shown in the following clause: We´ve been loyal customers for years, and this has been the most appalling treatment!” (L58). Later in the story the pharmacist realize that she had been judicial and unjustly throw the customers. She ends up apologizing to the customer, and she gives her guidance about her daughter’s new medicine.
