Nick and his father sit in the rowboat in the dark on the way to the Indian Camp, together with Uncle George and the Indians, who Uncle offers cigars. They are going to the Camp to help an Indian woman, who has difficulty by giving birth.
Nick’s father is a doctor and he has to do an operation on the woman, who is lying in the lower bunk and scream in a shanty. The woman is in a lot of pain and her husband cannot help her. But the only instrument Nick’s father has is a ‘jack-knife’, and he does not have any anaesthetics with him. The operation goes well, but the husband in the upper bunker has committed suicide.
Afterwards on the trip back from the Camp in the rowboat, Nick asks his father a lot of questions about this experience, and his father tries to answer him, nevertheless he is having a hard time doing that.
