loneliness is a feeling that we probably all have experienced. Sometimes you can feel special and other times you might feel way too “special” so you suddenly become weird and then nobody wants to be with you because people will think that they are weird to. This is what the story “about a boy” by Nick hornby from 1998 is about. The story tells you about Marcus who is this lonely and weird boy.
Marcus
“Marcus knew he was weird, and he knew that part of the reason he was weird was because his mum was weird.” Marcus is a very caring person and he loves his mother a lot. you can see in the quote that instead of breaking free and upsetting his mother by trying new things and being more like the other kids he tries to follow her “footsteps” and be a vegetarian and wear the same cloth as his mother and then he ends up as the weird kid in school because he stands out from the crowd. Therefore Marcus starts to feel left out and different from the other kids. In a lot of ways, he is more like a grown-up than a child. he takes a lot of responsibility when he takes care of his mom in an emotional way by trying to make her happy all the time and he does not have very many friends so he is mostly hanging out with his mom’s friends, who are all grown-ups. which all makes him adapt to this adult state of mind that he has. generally is Marcus a really sweet kid who is well behaved and very positive.
