The story is about a girl who gets a promise ring also called a purity ring from her parents for her 13th birthday. She was told that the ring represented her commitment to guard her heart and to stay a virgin until she was married.
She had worn her ring for more than two years; it was a blue topaz birthstone ring. She was the first one of her friends to receive such a ring, so they all came to her for advice on taking care of it.
A day when she forgot to take off her ring at practice her teammate threw a ball at her with such power that the blue heart stone in her ring broke off. Her dad had told her that it represented her commitment to guard her heart as it said in proverbs 4:23. Her mom had told her that the two diamonds represented her mom and dad standing next to her to help her stay strong.
Both her and her boyfriend imagined her hymen as the paper covered doorways that cheerleaders made for the basketball teams to run through. Her boyfriend only accepted hand jobs out of the fear of breaking her.
She continued to wear her broken ring while fearing what others and her boyfriend might think if she took it off.
