Imagine a parent entering a room that looks like a conference room. On a table is a sheet of paper with numerous questions that many people would like to have control over. Options such as hair color, skin color, personality traits, and other physical appearances are listed on the sheet. Once you have filled in the questions, a baby appears as described just before. The baby is in perfect health and looks perfect in every way. This scenario seems to exist only in a dream, but the possibility of designing a child has already become a reality in the near future. But it is safe? It is safe tabling with gens and changing them? And what will it be like having a child without any genetic modifications?
In 2017 in a ted talk presentation we meet the 54-year-old Paul s. Knoepfler who is a professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Human Anatomy. He talks about the problem with designer babies and how big of a risk we take be altering with DNA. Knoepfler describes that a designer baby is created in vitro by altering its genetic material in a way that preserves some traits and eliminates others. Among the applications are reducing the risk of disease, determining certain characteristics such as athletic ability, eye color, and intelligence, and determining gender. According to him, designer babies are associated with long-term risks, he describes them as “a kinder, gentler, positive eugenics.” Furthermore, he discusses what the government has to do with this researcher; “I also think it’s not that unlikely that governments might start taking an interest in genetic modification. So, for example our imagined GM Jenna child who is healthier, if there’s a generation that looks like they have lower healthcare costs, it’s possible that governments may start trying to compel their citizens to go the GM route.”
