The story takes place in the future. We hear about the Hadley family who has bought a Happy-life Home. They think that their lives couldn’t be any better. They do not have to worry about anything; the house does everything for them. You would think that they were all very happy, but the parents soon realize that this is not a solution to their problems, on the contrary!

It is thought provoking that the home is called “Happy-life”, because it really does the exact opposite. It makes the life invaluable. At first thought it sounds nice. You do not have to cook, clean and do the laundry. But if you think about it, your life would be really boring, and without pleasures of any kind. You would never get the credit for a good tasting meal and never get to be proud of anything you have done on your own.

The interesting room of the house is the nursery. It is scaring how it becomes a sort of person; it must certainly get a personality and almost a mind of its own.

A room cannot be sad, angry or like someone better than other. But there are several examples of a personifying of the room. You can see it, when the father wants to shot down the room. P 25, l 22 “ I don’t imagine the room will like being turned off”, p 25, l 26 “I wonder if it hates me for wanting to switch it off” It is like the hole house manipulates the humans to think these scary thoughts. Especially the children are influenced by it. The machinery has taken the control of their minds, and it self.
