The term non-fiction covers a wide-range of very different kinds of writing. It may be articles,
advertisements, speeches, Facebook updates, blogs etc. etc.
Non-fiction texts may be written for various purposes e.g. to inform, to persuade, to entertain, to
argue.
When you work with non-fiction texts, then first try to understand what the text is about and
distinguish between what is fact and what is opinion. Then you can analyse how the material is
presented and how it influences the reader´s understanding of the text. In order to do that you need
some analytical tools.
On the following page you find a Non-Fiction Analysis Chart to help you structure your analysis of a
piece of non-fiction.
Furthermore we will present you to the Forms of Appeal (appelformerne) – in a text written in
Danish.
You will have to use both these tools when you work with assignments in module 5.
