Today, I am honored to address all of you as a student of American culture and history here at Boston university. Our focus today is on a topic of great importance, but also great controversy. The ongoing discussion surrounding immigration in the United States. I will try to explain this complex and multifaceted subject, I aim to highlight the impact of immigration on American identity, culture, economy, and the nation's overall trajectory.

In recent times, there has been a notable decline in immigration to the United States with a drop of a staggering 70 percent, that is just about 200,000 individual immigrants. This decline represents the lowest level of immigration in more than a decade. While a variety of different factors contribute to this decline, experts point to the administration's restrictions and an unwelcoming tone set by the President, such as former President Donald trump as significant causes. Furthermore, the decision to accept only 18,000 refugees in the upcoming year, down from the previous limit of 30,000 signals a departure from the nation's historical stance on providing refuge to those in need.

While this decline might appear as a positive outcome for some people, especially some republicans, it is essential to consider its implications for the American economy, culture, and identity. The United States' economic growth is determined by on two pivotal factors, per capita income growth also known as GDP and population growth. Unlike many other advanced economies struggling with aging populations and declining birthrates, the United States has traditionally sustained population growth thanks to immigration, because United States is seen almost as a immigration hub where anything is possible as long as you just work hard, just like our beloved American dream. While other countries face a demographic crisis, our country's population was projected to grow by 90 million in the next 40 years, assuming immigration patterns continue as the same as they have done historically.
