Holden Caulfield is the main character of The Catcher in the Rye, who also narrates the story. He is a school student who has just been kicked out of a school called Pencey Prep. Even though he seems to be an intelligent boy, it doesn’t go well in school. It’s not because he doesn’t have the ability to get an education, he just can’t manage all the decisions and just don’t care. He struggles with, going from childhood to adulthood, which really is a big problem for him. His main problem is that he wants to stay in the innocence of childhood and never grow up. But he has to move into adulthood or else he moves into madness.
Holden doesn’t like his parents because they sent him away to a private school. He thinks that they feel he is useless and give up on him and therefore send him away.
But he has a very good and close relationship to his little sister Phoebe. He feels that she is the only one he can relate to and she is the only one who understands him.
Holden doesn’t have any real close friends and can’t keep relationships. He desperately needs human contact and love, but his self-protection from the world, is blocking him from looking for such interaction. He always ends up acting childish when he is on a date with a girl, because he doesn’t know what to do, so he gets very depressed and confused. For example when he gets on a date with Sally, he ends up scaring her away by saying they should get married.
