Meet Alex, a sixteen-year-old with tousled brown hair, glasses perched on his nose, and a lanky frame. He is from the US and has always dreamt of coming to France to study. It was his first day as an exchange student in the town of Nice, and he felt a mix of nerves and excitement in the crisp morning air.
Walking into Windfield High School, Alex navigated the unfamiliar faces and accents. The bustling hallways and groups of students added to his sense of being an outsider. Taking a deep breath, he adjusted his backpack and forged ahead.
In his first class, Alex introduced himself and was paired with a buddy, Sarah, who would help him acclimate. The bell rang, and they made their way to the next class, encountering the lively atmosphere of the high school.
In class, all the people spoke French. Alex had looked very much forward to speaking French all the time, but when he heard all the people in here speak French fluently, he didn’t know how to react or say, and he clearly could speak as well as the other students. But the worst part was that he couldt understand most of it.
During lunch, Alex was invited to join a group of students, an offer he hesitated but ultimately accepted. The cafeteria buzzed with conversation, and Alex found himself immersed in new faces and stories.
