In a northern England mining town, miners are on strike and the atmosphere is tense. Eleven-year old Billy Elliot, whose father and brother are participating in the strike, whose mother has died some time ago and whose grandmother is not completely aware of what's going on, doesn't like the brutal boxing lessons at school. Instead he stars dancing ballet, he like it, a lot, and he wants to go to the ballet school In London. At first his brother and father is much against it, but in the end, the father stops the strike and starts working, so he can get the money for the journey to the audition at Royal Ballet School. Billy gets accepted at the school of ballet. The movie ends with a scene that takes place years later, where his father and brother arrive at the ballet. The film ends, as the older and more mature Billy takes the stage, to perform a scene from Swan Lake.

The film is told from the side of Billy, who is the main character.

He is an ordinary boy, who wants to make a difference. He doesn’t want to box, like his father, brother and grandfathers did. Instead he wants to do something that he likes, something he can put his heart into. He is a small boy, very thin and he doesn’t look like he got any muscles at all.
