It takes place in the working-class, in a typical “city” in the north of England. The city was built because of the consequences that would come, when the miners work in the mine. Most of the people who live there, is working in the mines. In the story we here about a strike and it trigger a huge chaos. There are a lot of demonstrations in the city and many of the people there live there needs money and are in very big problems, if the miners close down and go home.
I think the most important characters in the film are: Billy, Jackie and the ballet teacher.
Billy is Jackie’s youngest son. He is about 11 years old and is very happy to move. We are following his dream and his relationship to the other characters in the movie. Billy is not like the other boys. All the others families have problems with money and some other small things. Billy has also other problems, but they are huge compared to the other problems. An example is that his mother is dead. He thinks a lot about her, and he misses her every day.
Billy’s dreams all the time about ballet. He thinks that it is a wonderful thing, and it makes him really happy to dance. He especially like to foot work. In the beginning of the movie, he is boxing. But the farther we get into the story, the more ballet dancer he would be. The special think about Billy is that he goes his own ways, and carries the dream he has, out in the life. He dares to go against all others, including his father.
