The first inhabitants in South Africa were called The San. There were hunter-gatherers, which lived for 40.000. years ago. They lived on what nature had to offer, and they ate fruits and the berries they could find in the bushes. They also shot and ate some wild animals, especially antelopes.

In the 17th century many ships from Europe passed the Cape of Good Hope on their way to east Africa and India. In 1652 the Dutch East India Company realised, that the Cape was a great strategic point, so they built a base. To start with the base was just a small one, but after some time, they needed workers. The base commander Jan van Riebeek, invited more Dutchmen to the Cape, and they got farmers, who quickly got the name Boers. In the end of the 18th century the British government was afraid that the French was taking, the full control of the cape. So they gave 5.000 one-way tickets, to the British people. They moved to South Africa and claimed the land that the Boers had. Then the Anglo-Boer war came. It was a war where the Boers attacked, and then the British revenged, and it was continuing like that, for many years.
