The first inhabitants The Sterkfontein Caves, have turned out to be very important in the history. In the caves archaeologists found remains of the first humans. The Australopithecus, is described as “an upright-walking small-brained creature”. The skeletons are thought to be about 3 million years old.
The san and the bantu The san were hunter-gatherers that roamed the countryside about 40,000 years ago and they were some of the first humans that lived in South Africa. The san were persons who belonged to people who lived on cattle ranching, without permanent residence, and they wandered to find the grazing areas pasture for the creatures. The whites did not trust them either, and in 1913 the dutch reformed church actually discussed whether the san were to be seen as people or as animals. Since 1994 the situation of the San has changed for the better. San people have started to form groups to make the rest of South African population aware of their existence and their rights. I 1996 a group was given back some of their land in the southern Kalahari land that had been taken away from many years ago. Bantu tribes came from other African countries and were in many ways different from the San. The people were taller and darker. The different tribes spoke the same type of language and their lifestyle was more advanced than that of the San people.
