Margaret Welch is a 33 years old widow and comes from Tennessee. She’s alone with two children and lives in Chicago. She is on public aid, because her job at the hotdog stand ended and her house burned down. She dropped out of high school in an age of 16 because she was getting married. Her first husband died and her second husband “walked out”. Her present boyfriend is Mexican.
She was trying to stay in school and apply for all these scholarships. She started at the nurse school with her best friend, who’s a black woman and comes from Puerto Rico. They both got straight A’s throughout their studying, but when they had to get their scholarships, she didn’t get it. But her friend did. She was upset and mad! She thinks it’s because she’s white and not a minority.
She means that if you’re a white woman you are supposed to take care of your kids. It’s not like men! As she says: ”If men are left with kids, all the women in the neighborhood are cooking and bringing him food and finding hand-me-down clothes for the kids and baby-sit for free, so he’s not stuck at home.” She definitely shows us her opinion about the non-similarity with men and women, but also the white people and black people.
