The Copenhagen Opera House: facts and construction

A.P. Møller and his wife Chastine Mc-Kinney paid for the building.

Henning Larsen, who was architect, had a very difficult job.

“Build the best opera and ballethouse in the world, and give the artists and colleagues the very best room to do their art. And in the end, remember to give theater-visitors a big experience”.

3.500 workers, advisers and experts used 2,4 millions of working hours on the opera projekt. The excavation of the Operahouse began i August 2001, and the construction began in November 2001.

The building was finished the first of October 2004 and it was consecrated the fifth of January 2005. In all it cost 2,5 billions danish kroner.

The sixe of the building is 41.000 square meters, from this 12.000 square metre above the ground. There is 14 floors, 9 above and 5 floors belowe the ground.

And nearly 1000 rooms.

There are many danish artists who has made the decoration, f.ex. Per Kirkeby, Lars Nørgaard og Pia Andersen.

I have not visited the Opera my self yet, but I am looking foreward to do it some day.
