The Amish has immigrated to the U.S.A. from Swiss and Germany. The Amish family’s teaches the children to speak Pennsylvanian Deutsch. So an Amish family can speak English, some speak German, and all speak Pennsylvanian Deutsch.

The Amish people live a very extraordinary life. They have many rules, they have to obey. Their main rule is not to be integrated in the modern society. From that rule, a whole lot of other rules were made. If they do not do as they are told to do, they get “shunned.” When an Amish is “shunned,” the person is not allowed to contact or be contacted by the person’s family. Some times though, when a rule is broken, depending on the rule and in which level it has broken, the person can get a special permission. That could be that the person was allowed to contact and be contacted by the family, but that the person still would be “shunned.”

A young Amish member is offered to live a normal life just like all the other young people in the US. The period is from a year to two years, and then they have to decide if they want to carry on being a normal person, or they want to be an Amish member. If they decide to be a normal person, then the Amish society have to decide if they are allowed to talk with each other. Either they decide to “shun” the person, or they give a special permission.
