Before the black and white people lived in South Africa, there were small tribes (stammer) called the Khoi and the San. They didn’t look like the black Africans we know today. They were short with a yellowish skin. They lived apart from each other. Both kept moving about the land, looking for animals to hunt. Many pictures also show how important it was to dance, because dancing brought them close to the spirits (ånderne).
For about 2000 years ago, came the black people from central Africa down to South Africa. They were farmers and knew how to make tool and weapons from iron, so they were much stronger than the Khoi and the San people. In 1652 it got much worse. The Europeans came and they were even stronger than the black Africans. They took the Khoi and the San people as slaves.
