At night Nick, his father and uncle George row with two other men to an Indian camp. The two other men are Indians. Why they are on the way to the Indian camp is because an Indian lady is having her labor and is also very sick. George is smoking a cigar and gives the two Indian men one each. George and his father are walking towards the shanti where there is standing an old woman with a lamp. Nick and the two Indian men come right after. The Lady has been having her baby for two days. While pulling the baby out of the lady she bites Uncle George on the arm. Under the surgery Nick does not look at the things that is going on. The doctor does a caesarean with a jackknife and sews it up with nine-foot, tapered gut leader. After the surgery Uncle George goes out to congratulate the Indian man but he has a blanket over his head. Uncle George pulls the blanket aside and sees that the Indian man has cut his throat with and razor. Nicks father apologizes for has brought him along and is calling him by his nickname. Nick asks his father about life and death on their way home.
