Blood Diamond is a movie co-produced and directed by Edward Zwick. Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon Hounsou and Jennifer Connelly are the main characters. The title refers to blood diamonds, which excavated out from warzones and sold to finance the conflicts. The film is set during Sierra Leone Civil War in 1996-2001. The movie is not based on a true story, but the diamonds conflicts are true. Parts of the movie are recorded in the southern Africa, including Mozambique’s capital.
The film begins with Revolutionary United Front (RUF) kidnapping Solomon Vandy. He separated from his family and sent to work as slave under the command of Captain Poison in the diamond mines. The RUF uses the diamond slaves’ extracts to buy weapons and fund their actions. While working in the diamond mines Solomon finds a huge pink diamond. Captain Poison notice Solomon with the diamond, but in the same moment the mines attacked by troops from the government, Solomon buries the diamond just before he was arrested.
In prison, Solomon meets Danny Archer, a former soldier in the SADF and now arrested for smuggling diamonds. He smuggled to the South African mercenary, colonel Coetzee. Archer is desperate to find a way to pay back Coetzee’s diamond he lost when he is arrested. He overhears Poisons conversation with Solomon about the diamond he dug before he is arrested. Archer put up a plan on how to find the big stone. He offers to help Solomon to get back his family in exchange for the diamond.
