The film begins with a tragic car accident; a mother”Sarah” loses her husband and daughter. One year later she goes hiking with her friends Sam, Holly, Beth, Rebecca and Juno. They explore a deep cave in the mountains, but their adventure soon goes wrong. About 3 kilometers underground a rock fells down and blocks their way out. They do not have many supplies, so their only way of survival is getting out. Though getting out is not especially easy. They get angry with each other, their friendship seems to slowly fall apart. Desperately struggling to get out they face hideous, humanlike flesh eating creatures, which have lived underground for a long time. Their only chance of survival is sticking together and not let sourness eat up and destroy their friendship.

The Descent’ has a very fine set of horror elements, the environments makes things really creepy and horrifying, that little shack in the woods, near the place where her husband and child died they live in before they go hiking is just awful. When in the shack, we get presented by the persons and we get to know why Juno is the leader, which is obvious due to the fact how she is. About the car crash in the beginning, we are inside the car where people are disoriented by noise, so you can actually say it is their fault because they are driving in the wrong track, but when the car crash happens we have a lot of sound- and gory effects. The man and the child dies by getting two pipes impaled through their skulls, and there have not been saved on the details, which I mentioned before. Thing about the story taking place in a cave is brilliant; it makes the environment even more creepy – And not just creepy, but claustrophobic. One of the girls get hurt down in the cave, she breaks her leg and again there have been used a very intimidating effect – you can see the bone sticking out of her leg, it looks very realistic, well it seems that this does not increase their chances of survival, and since it is very dark down there it does not increase their spirits, the only things you can see is what they look at with their flashlight-helmets. The first time we encounter the creatures “crawlers” is very scary, it is through a handheld camera, which one of the girls is holding. We look at Juno through the camera, then we look away on one of the other girls which are screaming, then back on Juno where the monster just stands there with an open mouth, to create this unexpected shock effect. The monster runs away and the girls get even more terrified. Here the killing begins; one by one the girls get mutilated by these horrific fiends. There have not been put a lid on these kills either; they are very gory and disgusting. There are two before the entrance, Sarah and Juno, but Sarah feels like Juno murdered her friends, so she takes the hack and hammers it into Junos’ leg and then she leaves her there to die. Sarah escapes as the last survivor, she takes the car and drives away. When she is a far from the horrific cave, she opens her window and throws up, which gives the feeling of disgust, which can be for her revenge, that she maybe regretted. At last we see her daughter in a hallucination, where she is down in the cave with her mother.
