The Amish are a group of people consisting of approximately 250000 members worldwide. They are Anabaptist which is like a branch of Christianity. They speak Pennsylvania Dutch and English. Most of them live in the US, primary in the states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana and New York.
The Amish are originally from Switzerland and Germany but because of religious persecution of the Amish in 18th century in Europe, they were forced to leave the continent and migrated to the States instead. The majority of the Amish are farming and the Amish community is very much based on farming and the fellowship it creates within the community.
The Amish are known for their simple lifestyle. They are also known for refusing to use modern technologies, but in the past few years the young generation has been slowly adapting to modern technologies such as cell phones. The reason they don’t use modern technologies is that they want to limit their contact with the outer world aka “The Devil’s Playground”. But this doesn’t mean they are limited to do stuff, they just use older ways. As an example they are using horses for transportation instead of cars.
The Amish has through the years created exceptions for which kind of modern technologies they can use. Amish business men are allowed to use cell phones so they can negotiate easily with the outer world. They have to do business with the other world even though they don’t want to, because they have to pay taxes to the government. Between each other the Amish don’t use money, instead they trade. The Amish are also allowed to use electricity and hydraulic power for their tools but only electricity they created themselves with generators.
