I thought it was cool, that Amish people lived in small isolated groups and found each other. The small groups came from Europe and the small groups were scattered in Europe and it was Swheiz, France, Germany and the Netherlands. They moved to America in three major groups. Because the Amish people fleeing Europe, was because they were tortured and burned at the stake.
The first group moved to about 1730 and settled in the newly opened land, called eastern Pennsylvania, called Lancaster County. The second major group came between 1810 and 1860 and settled mainly farther west in western Pennsylvania. One last minor wave came in the late 19th century and settled in the existing society in the United States, there are about 230,000 Amish and they have many children. Studies show that women have seven children, on average. In 1900 there were 8,000 Amish, in 1951 there were 31,000, in 1971, there were 71,000, in 1977, there were 84,000 and today approx. 250,000.
They see the family as the most important in Amish culture. It is common to have seven to ten children. I think it must be the long family table. They have a tradition and that is when the young approx. is 16-17 years old, for the law to take out and experience the world. They can choose whether they want to return to the Amish people or be in the real world, as most live in.
