Surveillance: Safety or invasion of privacy?

Surveillance has become a natural thing in our everyday. Some people call it safety, other call it invasion of privacy. Whenever you go the grocery store, you are being taped on video camera and saved on in their record for a couple of months. That goes for shops, malls, banks and so on. It is perfectly understandable, why they want the safety of surveillance. Shoplifting and more serious crimes can occur and threaten the safety and mobility of the shop. We want security and protection against corruption, crime and violence. With surveillance we can come a little closer to the goal of clean streets, because we have the tool to capture criminals by recording their actions and faces. That’s why I think surveillance, to a certain degree, is a wonderful tool to help us reach these goals. Being able to Record a whole society and use it a one pleases, is something that gives great power and control. Such an influential thing can shape and power a society to the better, but also the worse.

By accepting the increasing amount of surveillance, we are slowly pushing our own boundaries when it comes to privacy, and soon surveillance is not only used against criminals, but the everyday person, and little crimes, like not throwing the your garbage out, becomes punishable. Maybe that’s a bit exaggerated, but I think the future with supervision will be extreme, if we don’t set a grossing line for it to stop, when enough is enough.
