The text tells about, an Indian girl’s life in an unfamiliar town. Her father to a man named Anuj whom she actually does not know has just married her off. Everything is completely unfamiliar and she is not happy about her existence in this unknown place. The reason why she gets married with him is the fact that he is from Wales and her father believes that she would have a better life there, than she had in her native country. She misses her own country, her old life and her friends she left for marrying a man she does not even know. At the end of the story, she realizes that there is nothing else to do than accept her new situation in this strange place.
2. Characterize Lata and her relationship to Anuj:
Lata is an Indian girl who has just immigrated into Wales because of her marriage with Anuj; an Indian immigrant who is living in Wales. She meets a completely different lifestyle in Wales, and misses her old existence back in her native country.
Her parents in India arrange her marriage, and she does not really know her husband very well and she has no feelings for him yet. Her parents believed that she would have a better life in Wales than in India. Lata and Anuj do not really have something in common because they have both been living in different countries with different cultures. She is memorizing her old life back in India all the time and trying to be doing fine with her husband and new town, but it is extremely difficult for her. “Lata stared at Anuj, and then at her hennaed hands. It was true, she was his bride and wanted to love him desperately, but he made it so difficult for her at times”. They have not the same interests and there are a huge otherness between them. Anuj is an assimilated Indian man who feels himself as a Britain but Lata was grown up in India and she sees India as her native country, not Britain.”And he thought that he was as British as white people”. This quotation also shows us that they have different duties. Lata was happy of being Indian, she loves her country, and culture but Anuj is not feeling himself as an Indian.
