The story takes place in Cardiff, Wales, at the newly married couple, Lata and Anuj. Anuj has live in Wales for six years, where Lata has only live there for 4 months. Before she married Anuj, she lived with her parents in India. Therefore has a conflict arise, because Lata really misses her family and friends very much. She misses the food, the culture, the landscape and the traditions. She misses everything. In the story Lata and Anuj decide to go to the cinema in Bay, and watch a movie. Anuj choose a Bollywood movie, a movie which is filmed in India. Lata gets very delighted, because she can feel home again. During the movie she keeps telling Anuj, about the background and landscape. She doesn't concentrate about the action, only the background. In the end she suddenly discovers that her home isn't India anymore, it is Cardiff with Anuj.
Characterization of Lata:
Lata is an Indian woman, whose father got her married to Anuj. The special thing about Anuj is that he has live in Cardiff, the capital of Wales, for about six years. And he has the red passport, so he can give Lata a good future. A better life than her parents could give her. Even though that they live in Wales; Lata is still a traditional woman, because she wears the blue silky sari, which is an Indian dress. She fells like an old lady, when she sees the teenaged girls in tiny leather skirts and tank tops. But when she sees that her husband isn't attracted to them, she gets calm again. Lata has a brother, who has an obsession with Jennifer Lopez. He loved half-naked women, but Lata finds it unreliably. She also felt smothered when she entered his room back in time. Lata reminisce to her days in Indian. She introduces her best friend Mina, and informs how funny they had it. Mina used to say that Lata was the joker in the group. Lata also tells about a day with Ma at the dhobi, and how Baba got her married to Anuj. Her father, Baba, was convinced that marrying Anuj, was the best future for Lata. Lata disagree. She doesn't understand why Baba has that opinion, because Baba has never been out of Indian. In Wales she has to cooking, cleaning, hovering and washing, but she has never tried it before. In India there was hired help who did these things. Lata is homesick. She misses everything in India. Anuj tries to make her a good home, but she never really feels at home. But it is also all her associates, she had to say goodbye to; All her memories and dreams. That has Anuj forgotten about. The relationship between Lata and Anuj: "... She took a deep breath. She would learn to love him. Yes, Ma had said so; she would learn to love him..." In the beginning of the story, Lata doubt about her feelings about Anuj. She doesn't feel that she is ever going to belong to him. She doesn't see their home in Cardiff, as her home. Anuj mean that she must adjust as soon as she can, otherwise things would be difficult for her. Lata has her doubts on the relationship, she doesn't truly love Anuj. As mention, Ma has told her that she someday would learn to love him, so she decides that the only way to move on is trying to love him; trying to fall in love with him. After they had go to the cinema, and seen the Bollywood movie, she discovers that her home is with Anuj in Wales. She begins to cry after the movie, and Anuj tries to comfort. `..."You alright?" he asked quietly. She patted his hand and replied, "Yeah, I'm alright. Let's go home."..' She still misses the culture, but as long as she knows who she is, she can be everywhere. And everywhere can be her home.
