For the first time ever, Britain has won a Young People of the Year award! The winner of the award is 19 years old Joel Davis from London.

Published November 14th 2014

By Sofia Scharf Matthiesen

Joel Davis was born in 1995 in Islington, London. There he grew up with his empty-handed family. He spent most of his time nursing his sick mother, because his dad was out trying to provide for the underprivileged family.

Struggling in school

As if that wasn’t enough challenge for the young man, he also battled learning how to read. He says, “The words just didn’t make sense to me at all! I was so confused about how the other kids managed to read without any trouble.” This issue caused a lack of friends for Joel. Sadly the poor boy didn’t receive any assistance from the school, so he decided to take his situation in own hands. And it’s safe to say he did that!

Creator of tutoring service

The young man has set up a helping program, where other striving students can seek for homework help. Since the program was founded, more than 170 have gotten help, and it’s taught a lot of people that there is no shame in troubling in school. We can’t be good at all we do. Some kids have even met each other through the program, because there’s no such greater thing than a friend who gets you. Poor kids are now getting higher grades. University students have volunteered as teachers. Many others have been inspired by Davis’ idea; perhaps they’ve discovered it on the website he created to spread the word. He won £500 and got nominated for a YOPEY due to his initiative setting up the tutoring program.
