The movie “American beauty” by Sam Mendes, 1999, takes place in the suburban USA, where the protagonist, Lester, a 42-year-old, who is unloved by his daughter, ignored by his wife, unnecessary at work, goes through a midlife-crises, when he falls in love at first sight with the friend of his daughter (Jane), Angela.
Lester continuous to life his life happier than before, because he has a dream to get Angela.
Jane feels the same way as her father about the life until she starts dating Ricky, the neighbour, who is a drug dealer and records videos.
One night Ricky’s dad thinks that his son, Ricky, having sex with Lester, so when he confronts him about it, Ricky lies and he tells his father that it’s true what he sees.
Ricky’s father is gay and he goes to Lester’s house and kisses him, but Lester says, “I’m sorry”.
At the end of the movie, Rick’s dad shoots Lester in the head.
Characterisation of Lester
The movie starts with Lester that, he tells us about his life, and how everything is about to change. In the beginning of the movie, he is just a regular middle age man (42 years old), going through midlife crises. He is unhappy with his job, his wife and his life in general. Lester and his wife Carolyn are on the outside picture perfect, but on the inside, everything is a mess.
