I chose to talk about the Amish people, because I thought it was very interesting and I got really inspired by The Devils Playground.
The Amish
Amish people try to avoid the influence of the modern world. The see it as a danger to their community and a distraction from family life. They believe in God and family is a very important value for them. The first Amish people settled in Pennsylvania in America around 17th century. Today there are more than 200.000 Amish people living in America. Their original language is called Pennsylvania Dutch, but some speak English too. In the church they use German, at school the use English. The Amish ideal is to live in a community that shares the same beliefs. They use buggies for transportation, they don’t have any electricity and phones.
Rumspringa
Rumspringa means ‘’to jump around’’ and that is something the Amish teenagers do. When they turn 16, they can go to live aa an English youth. They go to parties, get drunk, and some of them even try drugs. They actually live a whole teenage life in just a couple of months or years. The reason why someone just needs a couple months and some need 4-5 years out in the normal every day, is because, they can’t make the choice between joining the Amish church or living like an English. If they choose to join the Amish church and get baptized, then they can’t leave the Amish community again. But if they choose the English way to live. They are getting shunned from the Amish church. And it means like you have to say goodbye to your family and friends, and you won´t see them again.
