The world we live in today is very different from the world my parents grew up in. Technology has developed with incredible speed over the last fifty years. We have reached the point where the internet and technological devices have become indispensable in our everyday lives. Especially young people use the internet and social media many hours a day. People can’t take you seriously if you’re not on some kind of social media platform. There are many different social networks, the most popular include: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. So how does social media affect the youth? To find an answer to that question, we must look at both the positive and negative things.
Youths can interact with people from other parts of the world by just a click of the button. Through these interactions, youths can share ideas, information and be exposed to many opportunities out there. Social media gives them the opportunity to make new friends and maintain relationships with your old friends. People who are naturally shy may say whatever they wish in public forums, without the fear of serious repercussions. However, too much social media also leads to addiction. Society today is full of people sitting next to each other, not talking, but just staring at their phones. We don’t have the same physical contact as we did a few years ago. Youths are spending more time with their social media friends than with their families, friends and loved ones. When they wake up, the first thing they check is their social media accounts. I can relate to that myself. Every morning when I wake up, I check everything that can be checked on my phone, and I can lay in my bed for over an hour. In the evening before I go to sleep, the last thing I check are the updates on my social medias.
