It is about Violet Jones who grew up to be a perfectionist because of her mom, and she is African-American, so she have really special hair that should be straightened and perfect. She is now older and it´s the day of her Birthday-party and it is 5:00 am and she found out that her boyfriend is proposing, but when she wakes up her boyfriend has to go to work, and she has to go to the Office for work, and when she is done she goes to lunch with her friends, to her friends house and the neighbors kids are playing with a water bottle and the water comes on Violet's hair and it ruins it, and she flips out and she is scared of not being proposed to by her boyfriend because of her hair, so she has to calls her mom and finds a salon, and when she finds a salon her hair comes off, because it is so destroyed of being straightened and perfect, so she looks horrible, then the manager of the salon gets her a wig, because Violet flips out. Then at her birthday party Violet`s boyfriend does not propose to her but instead he gives her a dog and she gets disappointed and breaks up with him, but she keeps the dog even if she still is a perfectionist, she then goes to work and she is completely miserable and the boss wants her to take some days off so she could get her head straight again. She then goes to the Mall and sees a little girl trying steal a dress and she expose her to the security guard, and then the girls dad comes and pick her up, and he gets really angry at Violet, because he thinks that Violet got his daugther in trouble, Violet then sees an African-American girl with blond hair at the Mall the same day and then she decide she want´s her hair blonde, and she wants to be her self. she then goes to a Party and she finds a guy and they are gonna hook up but then Violet realize it isn't her so she just runs away, and then her Dad comes and picks her up, and she asks him to drive to her Ex-boyfriends work-place, and she finds him there and then she finds out that he had slept with another woman, while they were together and she gets mad and then shaves her head bald, she then goes to work and everyone ignores her, and they don´t pay respect to her like they did in the past, it is like they don´t regognize her, but she then gets the idea of going to a therapist group, and she gets to know that she has to own her bald head, she then go to work with much more confidence, and it went great and then the girl that stole the dress at the mall invites Violet to a dinner with her dad to apolygies, and Violet and the dad form a romantic relationship. And the dad invite her on a date, and then they kiss and Violet Invites Will (the girl´s Dad) to her mom´s party and her mom is not happy with Will because Violet is not perfect anymore, and the mother insult Will because he owns a hair salon and he is a hairdresser, so Will gets mad and he thinks he is an embarrassment and he leaves. Next day Violet goes to work and she quits, because she have had enough of the boss, and she goes home and she finds her Ex because he is getting the rest of his stuff, they then hook up and he proposes, and Violet is now happy, and she wants to throw an engagement party where she realizes she don´t have to be perfect all the time and she jumps in the pool and ruins her close and everyone else also does even her mom, so the mom isn't perfect anymore. at the end, she is in her office selling a hair product and saying that everyone is beautiful and natural hair is beautiful and African-American hair should be protected and not destroyed by being straight all the time, so that´s why she is selling the product and Will helps her and they become business partners.
