Should there be a law to restrict screen time for children?
How much is too much? A question that is rather hard to answer and many do try. However, we often forget to look at the bright side of things. New platforms for learning such as iPads and mobile phones are a great way for kids to learn at an early age due to the broad availability of thousands of apps that does just that, enhances learning ability. They are also more likely to become dependent on the device at an early age due to the addicting nature of tablets. Now I know that the bright side isn’t always bright enough and it does come with some bad sides. Kids who have a television in their room are way more likely to become obese rather than kids who get by without one. This is an obvious problem and should not be acted lightly upon.
Increasing obesity in kids colliding with the increase in televisions at home could be a coincidence however it is far more likely that the two are directly linked. Some kids grow a bit too fond of the screen in their room and end up not leaving that room as often as they ought to be doing. The most logical solution should therefore be to cut back on the screen time that kids get. But this is not something that should be upkept by law, it should be the parent’s responsibility to restrict their own children to the number of hours a day that they themselves think is responsible. Because when some teenagers surpass 11 hours of media consumption a day it simply can´t be healthy anymore and some sort of parent intervention is needed.
