The story begins with Nick, His father and Uncle George on a beach with three indians how have rowed the boat`s they follow a trail to an indian village, the first thing they see when they get near the village is a light in the window of the shanty nearest the road. Inside on a wooden bunk lay a young indian woman how had been in labor for two days, She lay on the lower bunk while her husband was on the upper, he had cut his foot badly with an axe three days earlier. When Nick`s father was inside the shanty he ordered some boiling hot water, witch he put several things from a hankerchief, the indian woman was screaming a lot and Nick asked his father if he coulden`t give her some anaestic, but his father sed that he didn`t have any and that the screams were not important.
